Training & Instructional Design

Depending on the industry, you will hear a variety of terms thrown around to describe what we do: e-learning design, learning experience design, instructional design, etc. In the corporate world, instructional design typically refers to partnering with internal experts to develop training & onboarding programs for internal employees. In higher education, instructional design refers to partnering with faculty members and applying adult learning theory to build a course that will support learners - often in a new modality, like moving a course from in person to online, for example.

At MWCS, we specialize in serving learners in higher education. For university clients, we partner with teaching & learning staff to design courses when your instructional design team is at capacity. We also consult on faculty development programs. For educational technology clients, we offer customer success services like faculty-facing training design & delivery, applying adult learning theory to discuss how your product can be implemented in pedagogically sound ways. For academic publishers, we offer to read your product through a learning design lens to offer suggestions that will improve comprehension and student learning outcomes, and we can help draft built-in assessments for print or digital products.

A note on rates: Typically, we charge a project fee based on the scope of the work and your budget. However, in the interest of transparency, we have shared hourly rates to help you estimate what a potential project might cost before we have a chance to talk. Please note, actual prices can vary widely based on factors like budget, hours, scope, and timeline.

Higher education: Having worked as an instructional designer in higher education for four years, Brian Malone, owner of MWCS, knows how to work across most major LMSs, understands how to design learning for graduates and undergraduates of all ages, and excels at building relationships with your faculty SMEs. If your instructional design team is at capacity and you need outside help, Brian has worked for six different institutions. He can onboard quickly and make sure your courses are ready for on-time delivery. He is familiar with many tools, and has the most experience with: Canvas, Zoom, Slack, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365/Teams, Canva Panopto, Echo360, Hypothesis, VoiceThread, and Turnitin. Brian also led his team's faculty development efforts, and he is happy to consult with you on your faculty engagement strategies. He has helped design, deliver, and cross-train on hundreds of workshops.

Educational Technology Training & Customer Success: An experienced Customer Success Manager in the educational technology sector, Brian has used his knowledge of adult learning theory to develop and deliver relevant training to thousands of customers in his time. He'll learn your audience and create workshops relevant to your renewal strategy. Plus, if you need an eLearning solution, he can help you strategize that, too!

Academic publishers: Brian has worked on seven textbook projects over the last few years and will happily help you draft assessments and other learning activities for digital and print products. He also offers a readthrough of content from a learning design perspective to help you ensure learning outcomes for your readers.

Non-profits: Educating the public is likely central to your mission, but that doesn't mean you have the staff to create meaningful resources that will impact the public. Brian will partner with your team to leverage his knowledge of adult learning and basic visual design principles to help you brainstorm, create, and deliver public-facing educational resources relevant to your mission and audience. He has helped an organization like yours to brainstorm a way to onboard new members before, and he is especially passionate about economic justice work. From basic handouts to brochures to videos to full-length courses, Brian can draft copy, write scripts, create training guides, and strategize learning experiences that engage and impact your audience.
